About us

Into the heart of Berta Mullen White, a young and energetic mother, God planted a strong desire for the building of a Methodist Church in Shawsville. Her enthusiasm was shared by an understanding husband, John D. White, his mother, Mrs. Isaac White and brother George I. White. This dream was also shared by another mother and her family of eight children - the Robert Ryans.  The families of Emmett Barnett and his brother Hugh Barnett as well as Mr. & Mrs. George Gardner, joined in this dream as did another woman in the village, Mrs. Shelor Parish. These families continued to meet and received donations to start the church. In 1900, the families purchased land near the intersection of Route 11 and Alleghany Springs Road, where the first church was constructed and in memory of Berta Mullen White, bears the name White Memorial.

Over 100 years later, White Memorial is still a thriving and growing congregation of believers who worship their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. There are six Sunday School classes that meet on Sunday mornings. These comprise of two adult classes and one youth class, and a pre-school class, and early elementary and older elementary class.  The elementary and preschool students continue to enjoy practicing hand bells as well as learning and singing songs. They practice for 30-40 minutes most Sunday's within the school year and periodically perform during worship, which continues to be a blessing.  We are also blessed with the voices of our choir, directed by Bob Noel.  We are thankful for each opportunity to learn and worship together and for the freedom to do these things without fear.

The current membership of 216 provides leadership in many areas in the community. Our outreach into the community is evident in our support of the Eastern Montgomery County Food Pantry, the Shawsville Lay Ministerial Association, and Thrift Store, and a local pre-school program.
